Too much monoxide was in the list of 10 MOT fail items (start the bidding - can anyone beat that this month...). It runs bad when it's cold too, 'bag o spanners' would be kind to it. It's an '84 DF engine with a Pierburg 2e3 carb, manual petrol 'velle. I've got it booked in for a tune up and checkover, but if worst comes to worst I could be replacing the carb.

My question is what would I replace it with and from where. If anyone's got any suggestions they'd be most welcome. Not really up for laying out a few hundred on a set of twin carbs, think it's got to be something cheap and easy at the moment.

The "DF" never came with a 2e3, so if your engine really is a DF (the heads have smaller inlet ports etc) then it could be several things...
It could the idle co is just set to rich... did they try and adjust it?

Is the air filer clean?
oil clean and dizzy and leads/plugs in good nick? and the timing correct??

All these things effect the co....

Then are the components on the carb working correctly? a rebiuld kit is cheap from VW and cheaper from GSF....... worth doing, but it doesnt come with the accel diaphragm etc...

Definately DF stamped on the block, could be DG heads though, it's had a rebuild/reconn at some point so the previous owner told me....

It's had recent plugs, leads, oil, dizzy cap, rotor, air filter, co and timing have not been checked, got it booked into someone who knows about these things, he might cure it or might not, I'm just looking at the worst case scenario so I know what I'm doing (would be a first) if he says its a no-go. Rebuild kit's got possibilities now I think about it.
