Trying to locate a carb - airbox seal

Looking for the seal which the airbox pipe connects to the carb.
There isnt one on at all at the moment so theres a 6mm(ish) gap all the way round.

Would this affect performance with the gap and no seal?
Also looking for the hose from the air intake to the vacuum unit. It wasnt connected at all, so not sure if this "needs" to be on or not.

Tried a few places online but cant seem to find these parts (oh its a 2ltr Aircooled (1981))

Any advise welcomed
Thanks

Eh?
They dont have a "vacuum pump"!!! the flexi tube on the right is the "fresh air intake" for the air filter... this should be connected..

As for the "carb seal" whats under the one on the right?

Missing?... will effect performance and will be sucking in all sorts of dirt from the air...

Hi,

Looking at pics there seems to be a rubber seal/boot where the airfilter pipe comes onto the top of the carb, i presume theres one on the right side one due to the fact it doesnt move about.

The left side has a 6mm gap all the way round so just presume its missing something, you can lift the pipe up and is basically suspended there.

id say the seal/boot would be roughly 30mm diameter and 10mm deep and 6mm thick.

With regards to the fresh air hose, i just presumed the part where it connected was a pump dragging in the air from outside?

Will have another gander tomorow.

Regards
Martin

There's no seal or boot between the airbox and carbs - it's a push-on fit, plastic onto the lip of the carb intakes. The concertina pipe makes sure the engine is breathing cool air from the side of the van.

Thanks for the info,

Took off the airfilter box today, theres no seal on either side, was a real push to get the pipes over the carb, but went on with a positive clunk(?).

Still having problems with the power (or lack of), took it for a spin and is flat out at 55mph (foot to the floor). Im quite happy to be sat at 55, but cant be doing much for the consumption of fuel with foot to the floor.

Just to make matter worse, got stopped by police..first time in 10years!!, luckily docs were up to date on their computer, as only got it on friday :)

Least i knew i wasnt being pulled up for speeding :)

Going to check plugs, throttle cable slack, and chokes coming off tomorow......

It doesnt appear to be to be missfiring, in fact it generally runs smooth, just feels like im dragging another 2 tons behind it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again

55mph is not right - check those things but also carbs might need a good clean out - esp eg main jets in bottom of float chamber, which should be 1.35s or 1.375s but are sometimes only 1.325s so too lean at higher revs. What about the fuel filter - should be one down by the tank - change it if in any doubt and buy 2 so you have a spare for next time - only a couple of quid. Have you checked the timing? Are there any airleaks cos there's lots of places for that.
Tell us what you find - we need to know!

and the ign timing.. air filter not blocked etc etc...

Are you vaccum pipes right? pot an un edited pic of ya engine so we can check.

That will make a hell of a difference. Mine was like that till i re did the timing and rebuilt the vaccum setup.

Heres a pic of engine bay....

Noticed a few pics with a "T" piece on one pipe....with mine it seems to go elsewhere. !

[img:800:600]http://www.rafflez.co.uk/camper/enginesmall.jpg[/img]

Checked the plugs/airfilter....plugs were a bit "cokey" but generally ok - didnt look that old (same with HT Leads), Airfilter seems ok.

Dont think my technical skills go as far as cleaning the carb yet ;)

Having few problems starting at the moment also, fired up first thing today, but then wouldnt start again later. - it will bump start tho

Just found these 2 images on the 80-90 site of the same engine....
The Distributor Vacuum unit seems different to the one on mine (2 outlets coming off it - only 1 on mine (going to carb on the left).

Heres a closeup of the Distributor/vacuum unit...

Noticed its different to the pics above (only one pipe coming off it)

Hope this helps..

Managed to get it started for a run out today, but still only pushing 55 :/

Don't follow the pic on the wiki the vaccum is all wrong!

I'll post the right setup when i'm back from work.

Your diz is a single vac one - should really be a dual vac.
The wiki picture of the yellow van is of mine a couple of years back and as far as I'm concerned it's correct - and those who know about these things agree. I await the discussion....

Would a "dual vac" one solve the problem? - i know theres many other variables so probably not a good question.

Any idea where to source the parts?

Hard to get my head round all the info when i dont have much knowledge about mechanicals.

your right! i'm thinking of the picture with the red engine bay:-

Anyway this diagram shows you the setup.

http://www.tangen.nu/downloads/lbx20.pdf - page 30

Without the correct advance and retard the spark could be missing the correct timing and acting as a limiter. Mine cane with a 009 dizzy and ran pants. The 2nd hand setupwas worth its weight :)

Try volksheven, not far from you.
