Which gearbox for a 1.9TD

Hello,

hopefully somebody can help me?

The engine/gearbox in my 1.9 Caravelle have blown up and I've got hold of a 1.9TD (not TDi) from a '94 Golf to replace the engine. I've been told I need the gearbox from a 1.6TD T25 (plus adaptor plate etc) to replace my dead box.

Having spoken to most of the VW gearbox specialists in the area, they all seem to have a different opinion of which box I should actually go for. Can anybody tell me how much of this is right and what's the best way for me to go next, please?

1. I need a diesel gearbox as I need the diesel bell-housing to fit my 1.9TD

2. The non-TD diesel box is too low ratio for the 1.9TD engine

3. The TD box is still too short-geared for the 1.9TD, but 16" wheels might help.

4. The 1.9 petrol box has the same ratio's as the 1.6TD box (how does the bell-housing work, then?)

5. The four-speed box is stronger than the five-speed box

Any help will be much appreciated,

1. Diesel bell housing and input shaft will fit your box.
2. The AAZ is the highest revving diesel vw have ever made and revs higher than any water boxer.
3. The td box is low geared box of low output from standard engines.
4. Petrol gearboxes are better sutied to the better diesels but are far from perfect.
5. 4 speeds are much better than 5 speeds.

My advice would be put diesel bell housing and input shaft on your current gearbox.

Hello,

thanks very much for that - unfortunately, my current gearbox is an automatic and I think I've shredded all the gears in it by running it with no oil for God knows how many miles (my driveshaft seals both blew on my last motorway trip) - certainly, it randomly jumps out of gear on a regular basis, now...

I wanted to sell my van and get a manual anyway, just from an economy point of view - this isn't quite the way I wanted to do it, but there you go...

Are the ratio's all different on a 5 speed box, or is it the same as a 4 speed but with a tall 5th gear for cruising?

5 speeds generally dont have a taller 5th.. (there are a couple of odd ratio boxes though, from early vans) the 4 speed is generally thought to be the stronger box..

Lots of different combinations of ratios.. gearbox code is the important bit..
