leaking petrol tank

I filled up today ready for a trip to Dorset next weekend, strong smell of petrol all the way home, thought it might be slopping out the filler cap as I'd filled it to the top but when I got home I had a quick look under n it was running down the rear part of the tank n dripping on the floor. Now I know they like to rust on top but could it be anything else other than a gert big hole

Not had this problem personally but the tanks can rust on the top. I reakon this maybe your first port of call if not check all pipes etc and also the pipes to the expansion tank in the wheel wells :ok

mine leaks if filled to the brim, the tank goes rusty in the dip of it where water collects.

Just fixed mine a week ago.

No rust in the top/middle area! but the larger bore expansion pipe that joins the 2 sides up had popped out on the filler side.

Also brushed off some rust under the filler on the flat bit and it had about 6 pin prick holes. Polished the rut off and gave it a good coat in petro patch and some of the gause it comes with.

1st time i've not had to park with the door upwind and no ones close down wind while camping :)

have a look on the wiki here

Safest thing to do is take the tank off, examine everything, fix whatever needs fixing and put back.

Tank removal looks like a p.i.ta. but I have done it several times on my own with a trolley jack (would be easy with two people on it), but if you have just filled up you either need to drain the tank first, or if safe to do so drive van until tank is nearly empty. Doesn't sound like yours is safe!
