Just out of interest when people talk about the mtdi are they using the standard tdi pump modified to a mechanical pump somehow or is it a different pump used? Im not asking for any1s trade secrets, i understand people need to make a living out of this!

Im in the process of fitting a 2.1 pug engine at the moment just wondered what people are doing with the tdi, i have 1 in the shed may use it in my other T25

youthy giblets, this is very technical question for the serious mechanics on the forum. You may get a better response posting this in either 'Technical' or better still 'T25 Alternative Engines'. :)

Do a search, loads of info.
TDI, from the factory is fly by wire (no throttle cable, done by electronics), if your not right good with wires, or want a bit more power than the fly by wire set up gives then people revert to a mechannical pump.
You get the advantages of a direct injection engine, but much simpler to instal.
Building a Mtdi pump is simply not a case of finding a AAZ pump and bolting it on as some people think, it will work but not as good as it could or should be.
Building a good Mtdi pump takes a bit of knowledge and patience to get right, unless you know a man that can.

I ran one for about 20k a few years back, great learning curve!

I know the ins and outs of a normal fly by wire tdi and i no a man that has done many tdi conversions in mk2 golf countys. Just interested to no if the mtdi is the origional tdi pump used converted to mechanical operation?

No its not... its a mechanical injection pump (oldstyle), not a modified Tdi setup

Often the reason is maintainability and reliability in the outback...

You can't convert a EDC pump to TDI, well, you probably could but that would be daft.

The art is finding a vehicle with the spec of pump you want then taking the cam plate from the TDI and putting it in the mTDI pump.

Cummins 4bt pump is popular over the pond, my pump was a mish mash of UK parts, but not easy to replicate.
The Fiat Chroma pump is like rocking horse doo doo.

It may run but effiency and power will be way off, AAZ pump is so wrong.
