Hi everyone,

Just a couple of quick questions.

I have a knackered 1987 1.6TD JX in my camper. Well... actually it is on the floor as I took it out the other day. I have the opportunity to buy a 1987 1.6TD (engine code SB) that has done 170,000 miles. The owner says it has the usual smoke on startup but pulls well. The Cam belt was changed 5000 miles ago.

1) What is the difference between the JX and the SB?

2) Is it a direct swap... ie no mods needed to put in my camper.

3) The engine will come complete with the 5 speed gearbox and everything. Approximately how much money should I pay for this?

Fingers crossed this engine is the answer as I really need to get the camper going urgently (looking for a job) at the cheapest possible price. When I get a job I will read more of your forums and look to upgrade the engine at a later date.

near as damn is same engine so will give simialr performance- SB was out of passats etc and was fitted with intercooler . *Might* give a little more performance in a T3 due to differing injectors/pump.
I fitted one in my bus last year - usual story - swap oil pick up/sump blah blah blah - no real hassle.
ONLY problem was injection pump sits a little higher so either put on your JX pump or cut a very small hole in engine lid to clear pump then rivet an ali plate over it.

IMHO it`s not worth the effort to put in a motor that`s done that mileage, you`ll soon be swapping it again.

A good engine shouldn`t smoke on start-up, a minor amount that clears straight away is OK, but anything more than that means future work and expense. The sheer graft involved in swapping an engine makes it un-viable unless you are skint and that motor is your only option.

I would scout about for a better proposition, £300 will get you something hopefully less worn-out, you might even land on a decent AAZ 1.9Td motor for a little more (but everyone and his dog is looking for the same thing as you)

1. Bigger injectors, better fuel pump but with clearnace probs, intercooler, water cooled turbo.

2. Will need bits swoping from one to another.

3. Not alot, sounds like its near the end of its life (1.6's) do not last.
