Anyone out there who can help? - symptoms are as follows:

Van been standing for a few years. All looks sound. Engine runs ok. All wheels turn freely (eventually).

But, when I try to depress the clutch the pedal is rock hard, but I can select a gear!!

The van sits there and goes nowhere when I increase the revs, no apparent strain on the engine as it revs freely.

Now I am NO mechanical genius but I pretty sure this is not supposed to happen.

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions or can tell me what's broken.

has the clutch been removed?

Normally, the clutch will stick and you wont be able to engage gear..

The van is complete.

I have removed nothing yet - done loads of Aircooled stuff but this is a whole new ballgame.

The Van engine starts, I cannot depress the clutch more than an inch or so before it stops solidly a la break pedal full on. But I can happily select a number of gears without problem. But then when I would expect to pull away the engine revs away merrily but no forward go.

The most probable cause is a seized clutch slave cylinder.

Cheers for the tip, will start to hunt down the slave cylinder - assume that this means I am hydraulic not cable like in the T2.

It's a whole new learning curve.

yeah hydraulic!! top up for brake and clutch is in dash console, behind clutch. clutch slave cylinder is next to the starter, just left of the middle at the top (nearest drivers seat)

Mmm.. it would have to have seized when the clucth had been pressed.. possible I suppose....

easy to see it from the wheel arch/underneath, see if the actuating arm is pointing a long way away from the cyl..

Possible siezed clutch cross-shaft, release bearing/spigot shaft sleeve, seized piston in slave cylinder?

Cheers Tex, that'll keep me occupied this weekend!!

You could try loosening the pipe to the slave cylinder (follow the pipe) and have someone operate the clutch pedal.

If the pedal travels freely then you'll know your in the right neighourhood and that the fault is at the gearbox end.

FORGOT TO ADD: Cover the end otherwise you'll have fluid going all over the place.

Hey, is it standing on bricks by any chance?

loosen the clutch bleed nipple if peddal goes down
leave the nipple open check for movment at the leaver if there is then it's a box out job

Hey Spannerneck - done this test and the pedal goes down no probs. Which lever should I be checking?

The lever that the slave cylinder rod pushes down.

Simple innit?.
