Mk 3 golf L plate?

Am I correct in assuming a mk 3 golf L reg would have a 1y engine? and it would be a relatively straight forward job to replace my 1.6 na diesel with,
Advice gratefully received as it may not be available for long

could be 1Y or AAZ or 1Z

Thanks, they think it is a 1y so I shall start bidding for it

If it has no turbo its a 1Y
