Thinking about buying a type 25 or type two, but need info to weigh up pros and cons.

Can anyone tell me what the brake setup is on the t25?

I would imagine discs at front, self adjusting drums at rear and servo assisted is the standard setup?

If anyone knows what the setup is on a late 70's type 2 that would be useful too.

yep... later 86' models have sliding calipers and a bigger pad

Did the bays have servos?

UK spec 1972~79 VW Type 2s. These vehicles, with factory-fitted front disc brakes, do NOT have vacuum servo-assisted brakes

Which is cobblers. The 1700, 1800 and 2 litre bays had servo as standard.

A type25, as far as I'm concerned beats the Bay into a cocked hat. The early CT engined T25 didn't have servo. The clutch cable wasn't man enough for the 228mm clutch on the early 2 litres either. Pulled throught the front bulkhead.!

My British specification, right-hand drive, 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Kombi, Westfalia Continental campervan, previously had the factory-fitted, original AD-Series (later superceded by the AS-Series), twin-port, VW 1600 Type 1 style engine, as have most British specification, right-hand drive, 1972~79 VW Type 2s. These vehicles, with factory-fitted front disc brakes, do NOT have vacuum servo-assisted brakes!

I think the answer on the type 2s is that some have servos and some don't.

The wife wants a bay, but I want decent brakes and engine. Let the fight begin!

Early T25 has the same type of setup and late bays.. the 1.6CT (really I would avoid that..) can have a servo or not.. (it was an option)

I have a early watercooled caravelle and it has the "early" brakes and there is nothing wrong with them.. wehen in good nick and serviced (just like any car!!) the later brakes are just as good..

You have to go drive a bay and see what you think.. the T25 is such a much more modern vehicle..

Yep some Bays had servos (1600s) some didn't and the bigger engine (type 4 engines) had vacuum assist.

As for the choice between Bays & T25s - test drive both and your wife will see the big difference in handling - later T25s have Power steering. Also, Bays are great to look at,but they are colder, draughtier, slightly smaller and prone to even more rust than T25.

Loved my Bay but love my T25 even more - just sad that I can't use it over Easter

Only some T25's had power steering, but you can retro fit.. or I expect to see a few electronic power assists coming to market soon..

Whoever put that in Samba is dead wrong. Only bays I ever saw in US without servo and disk front were early ones with big bolt pattern wheels.. All bays with discs had small bolt patern wheels and had servos. Small partern started in 72 I think, not sure of year, but last year of low front markers was 1600 upright engine with small bolt pattern, front discs, and servo. Next year was type 4 engine. All I ever saw with small bolt pattern wheels are servo disk system.... and I worked a good many of them as a VW mechanic in the 70's.

OK. Maybe we'll look for a bay without rot with servo assisted brakes and maybe deal with the power issue later, perhaps you can fit a 2.0L turbo diesel engine to a bay with a bit of buggering about.

I have to agree with the other half that they look pretty, but then I also think that the T25 looks F hard drop a couple of inches with fat tyres.

TD a bay....... now you really want a lot of hassle......
