Please help,my V8 T25 is so close to starting, but it just wont. There are a few things that it may be, my initial feeling is that i have an earthing problem, the reason i say this is that earth strap that goes from the battery to the body work is getting hot when i try to start the van. I have put a new battery in it and it also has a brand spankin new starter motor, the earth strap on the gearbox is attached, would it benifit from one on the engine?

thanks in advance

Have checked most of that, still doesn`t explain why the battery earth lead is getting hot, i think it means that there is a power darin and that the power is being earthed premiturely,Is this a correct assupmtion?

If you are cranking the engine over for more than 10 or 20 seconds the earth strap will get hot, it is carrying 200+ Amps.
Make sure both ends are clean and tight.

I'm pretty sure there should be an earth strap on the engine. Some one more awake than I will tell you where.

 I think the problem may be the starter motor, although its brand new, think that it doesn`t have the poke to turn the motor, may have to look into one that offers more turning power.

Ok read the post, starter is a LUCAS and its for an up to 1982 1.6 or 2.0 Aircooled T25, It turns over when it is cold but after about 10 seconds or so gets a bit warm and the performance goes down the swanny.

Thanks for the reply edoh did that this morning put in a new bush cleaned the end of the starter put a drop of oil in to aid rotation. I tried the starter with the engine out and it spins away quite happily but struggles after a few turns with V8, Just to check, there are three wires on the solanoid, one from the battery, two from there into the alt and the ignition one with the spade connector, i haven`t missed anything have I ???
