Hi and help please - water had leaked from hole next to right hand side of engine next to the spark plug nearest the back seat - the AA man told me it was a core plug that had blown - when i put my finger in the hole is there - now ive got another spare engine in shed so checked that and found the "plug" but it is a hex nut which unscrews - i unscrewed it and its connect to a thread - now confused as to what this is - haynes and bently no help as cannot find description as to what it is - it cannot be a core plug as apparently i have to bang that in BUT the spare has a screw thread on it - hope this makes sense - regards john

the one with the thread is to drain down the cooling system. the otherone is the core plug. pm me your address i have one here i will post you for nowt.

There are no "core plugs" next to the sparkplugs..... only large domed nuts that hold the heads on..... We are talking a 1.9 or 2.1 waterboxer....???

I think we're talking about a broken stud and the nut has gone for a trip on its own!

Thats a head stud/nut....... NOT a core plug... Bliddy AA man was a numpty....

If you have "lost" one then its a rusted/snapped head stud.. and the motor will not run for very long before blowing up...... So dont...

Speak to Elite... as unless you can do the work yourself there isnt many alternatives....

there isnt a threaded bit on that end. the rod you see here is one part and the threaded bit has rusted into the engine block and it has snapped off at the bottom when it has been put under stress when it was removed.

in your case the nut shaped part of the rod has snapped off. you might be lucky and the rods might not be rusted into the engine and they will undo without snapping. if they do snap its a new engine i am afraid.

although i have heard mixed reports on quality elite do a recon for under £500

i would ask Si (aka tomanytoys) who posted on your thread earlier for a second opinion as there isnt much he doesnt know about.

The stud looks relatively new. Find another head nut and see if it will torque to 50NM. Then go over the rest of them. If the stud pulls, it was going to.
You may need to change the head rings if the engine has run with the nut missing. You'll be talking about an engine gasket set at about £75.
A lot of people don't know that the torque for the water boxer head nut is 50NM or 37ft lbs. They do them to the same as a beetle 25ft lbs.

I charge £740 for a full rebuild with all new studs.

Are you Laurie Petit? or another volkswagen engine rebuilding Laurie?

Bob... Laurie has been asked the same question a couple of times and hasnt confirmed... I believe it poss is... as I know of no other "Laurie" thats been doing wbx's since the mid 80's...
