Carbon monoxide rises (don't know about CO2 though! ) and so does smoke, so the alarms need to be up a height somewhere. Butane / propane alarms need to be near the floor level though.

Smoke detector high up in the pop top & CO2 detector low down at floor level. :D

There is always debate on the CO alarms, the 'official' advice is as near to the relevant appliance (i.e. cooker and/or fridge) as possible, however this will always alarm if it's near the cooker so you look for the 'pooling' of CO which once cooled is heavier than air.

I should add that those cardboard 'indicator' CO alarms are cr@p ... in fact they should be illegal ! As we were told at Mines Rescue Service they are handy, because the Fire Brigade can see straight away what's killed you :(

I was just going by the instructions that came with our alarm:

"For detectors located in the same room as a fuel-burning appliance; if the detector is located on the wall it should be located at a height greater than the height of any door or window but at least 150mm from the ceiling. If the detector is mounted on the ceiling it should be at least 300mm from any wall."

Can't see any references to mounting the alarm at a low height so now I'm . . . confused.com!
