Took the van out today - first time for about five weeks. Stalled at m25 roundabout and starter motor wouldn,t turn - stuck in middle of traffic. Never happened before. called RAC but after about 5 min it started again and is OK now. Will check and tighten leads tomorrow ?any other possibles - dont want that to happen again

carry a rubber mallet and give the starter a belt if it conks out. if it unsticks it it may be your starter bush wants replacing. There was many a time in my bay when I had to jump out of the drivers door, run back, roll under the van and give it a clout amongst hooting horns and motorbikes roaring past your ear!

Mine used to jam up on the doka, clouting it worked for a while, then didn't any more, get a reconned one in the end.

The small wire on top of solenoid maybe corroded & about to drop off--but if starter is years old it may be better to replace---check the bush in bell housing if this is worn out-replace--soak new one in engine oil overnight before fitting--also check & clean earth strap between gearbox & body--
