Hi Chaps,

I am new to the site but am in need of help.
cj is looking into finding a couple of front brake back plates, but thinks i may be out of luck and vw by all accounts dont sell them anymore.
Does anyone else have any for sale, as mine are shot to pieces, and i assume it wont pass an mot with them as they are.

I have been muching in the back ground for sometime but have only recently managed to get my password and user id sorted out by Harrymann.

My syncro is some way from being off road ready, but it is slowly getting there. Hopefully get to meet everyone one day at a meeting.

AKA full throttle on brickyard site, i wont get any help now.

Throw them in the bin more hassle than they are worth, not an MOT item.

I managed to get one from VW last year - I think it was the Off-side, but the other was definetly obsolete, so I guess they both must have gone obsolete now.

What are they for? Is it just to stop stones & like getting throw omto discs/pads?

If it does become an issue*, can MIG a few bits of steel sheet onto what's left, to make them appear to be useful

* My MOT centre said they must be in good nick (or maybe meant only if they are fitted i.e. not fitted or good if they are fitted)....

Its a grey area for the MoT. Both mine fell of my Scirocco. Passed anyway, even with rusty bits still visible. My Golf only ever had one. No problems there either. Depends if your testers in a bad mood and how close he looks. Other than keeping stones off the disc I'm not really sure of the purpose. To aid brake overheating?

Not a grey area at all, book is crystal clear on this. Any tester that fails one on this will have explaining to do if owner apealls. The problem is the majority of the motor trade and mot testers are completely brain dead.

Hmm. Never looked into it in too much detail though to be honest, Its never bothered me. I was told it by a tester, but..

Cant weld anything to it as there is nothing solid left on it, a little tap with the hammer and it should all fall off.

I have fitted twin head lights to it and the inner lamps are not wired up, will this fail an MOT.

The inner lights could be another controvercal issue. Tecnicly you only need a matched pair for the main beam so the outer H4's alone would do that. As they are fitted and VW wired them direct to main beam (no isolator) maybe they should work but if they are classed as auxilurly driving lamps (presumably with a seperate isolation switch) they aren't required or need testing. It depends how arsey the tester is I guess but to save an argument cover them with tape or something as that would render them unusable so would be classed as if they weren't fitted. The other option ofcourse is to wire them up, not hard, they are just wired in parralel with the outer main beams.

not all mot testers are brain dead although i`d agree that a lot dont do their jobs properly.

BACKPLATES are a fail as laid out in the testers manual if excessivly corroded or missing.

this is intended to refer to the back plate which holds shoes and cylinders and hanbrake mechanisms and not the guards that are fitted to disc brake set ups as are being discussed.

the fact that we (myself included) refer to them as backplates is really the only confusing matter.

disc brake guards are not included in the inspection unless they deem to adversely effect steering,suspension or brakes in which case they could then fail.

which is not likely.

in addition to this if the vehicle has been "modified" then even a fail item could then pass.
