How can I find out if my automatic choke is working, it's not bad starting but takes a few turns, & then has a habit of stopping unless I've got my foot on the throttle keeping the rev's up, not easy when braking at a roundabout or junction. Once it's warmed up it's fine, (1981 2ltr ac)

have a peep under the ends of the air filters(on top of the carbs) before you start the bus, the flaps should be closed (showing choke on) once the van has warmed (take a fifteen min drive) check again. the flaps should be vertical (choke off)
if not the auto choke can be adjusted.

Not wishing to state the obvious but I hope you are using the correct starting procedure for these solex carbs - that is turn on ignition, press throttle to the floor and release (this sets the chokes at max and squirts some neat fuel), then churn to start. As the chokes warm up (they are electrical) and you use the throttle in normal driving they will ease back to be fully off in a few minutes.

Sounds like the choke / throttle interconnection to me.

When the choke is on, (engine cold) there is a lever on the choke unit that opens, via an interconnecting rod, the throttle a bit to increase the revs. I think it is on the left carb which has the idling system on it?. As the choke warms up the lever gradually reduces the amount of extra throttle so that when fully warmed up it is having no effect and the tickover is now set bt the idling screw.

It sounds to me that this link just needs to be adjusted so that you add more revs.
