Hi folks,

been reading and re-reading posts on this....

Wanting to put a 3 point in the rear....and read on here that for a panel van, you take the grill out of the side vent, drill a hole and weld spreader plate with nut to it. Is this correct??????? Or can it be done from the inside??

Got the belt - its replacing a lap belt. so need two new fixings on the side of the van so that the belt is out of the way when the bed is flat.

some vans have a captive nut others don't! i'll be bringing my welder too then?

Not unless we come in two vans....this is for the other one....will be bringing the velle which has the captive nut!

Hoepfully won't need to weld owt to the roof!

In our panel van, when we bought it, it had two 3-point rear seat belts in. The two bolt down points were, one behind the grille on the side panel towards the rear of the van, and the other bolted through the wheel-arch.

Neither of them were welded, but a metal backing plate was used to strengthen the surface that the nut and bolt were plugged through.

Out of interest, did you get the £50 three point belts from JK ? I was after a pair of these too, but wasn't sure if they were long enough to house a)Someone very fat, or B) a Baby-seat. The ones already in the van looked like 3rd party shorter belts from any old vehicle as they were too short for normal sized people.

sorry no, not the JK ones. Got one by fluke on a seat that came with another van, and just got a couple through the club!

No worries, it sounds like the JK ones are long enough as they say they are for fitting with r&r beds. But certainly, I believe you can safely fit those 3-pointers without any need for welding (using metal backing plates).

..and the third one through the floor?
Just asking because I'm about to attempt to fit three pointers into my panel van. I can see where the grille one and the arch one goes, but not exactly sure about the floor ones.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ah yes, sorry the third one, i.e. the bit that the belt clips into is bolted on the floor inside the seat-cupboard.

Thanks mate. Whereabouts on the floor? On the flat bit or the rising bit of the engine bay? If on the flat bit then how far in front of the rising bit? (sorry for all the technical speak )

Can't remember now, I'll let you know after I've looked tonight. I've a feeling it was just on the rise for the engine bay - but I'll check.

as you look at your engine bulkhead, (the slopey bit) you will see a couple of raised,flat panels. This is where we have bolted the lap belts to in the panel. They are the same points used by my caravelle for rear lap belts.

Pretty sure you can, I got an email back from Autosafe who I'd ask for a quote to fit belts to a Transporter they said ...

we neither weld or pop rivet mounting plates into vehicles.

When the mounting plates are fitted, they are placed/fitted to the other side of the anchor point and are then compressed when tightened. The load in the event of an accident is spread by the fitting of the correct size anchor/mounting plate.

Which now makes me more inclined to have a go at doing it myself ... so I'll probably be asking a load of questions in the next day or so!

As ermie571 said, I took a look this morning and noticed mine were at the top of the sloping bit going up to the engine bay rather than on the floor.

That's great , I have finally sussed out how to do it from following this thread! One quick question though. This is all for fitting a 3 point seat belt on the near side of van , right? Off side would have to be a lap belt , am presuming because of wardrobe being in the way??
