Help please, I need to change the water pump on a 1600 diesel but the free-wheeling pulley that the cam belt goes round is in the way. How do I remove it and is this pulley adjustable? Many thanks, Rich.

Sorry, I forgot to say it's about 1988 vintage.

Rich, water pump is located underneath the alternator. No need to remove cambelt cover.

Phil, thanks for the reply. My particular engine has the water pump under the alternator right at the back of the engine as you said. However one of the bolts on the pump casing is behind this pulley wheel round which the cam belt runs. I thought I'd trap the belt to save the timing and remove the pulley. Trouble is the pulley is free-running and I don't know how to get it off. The pump's been on for 20 years and at last needs replacing. As you can guess I'm just your average diy bod. And I'm stuck. I'll soon be dead too if I don,t fix it in time for a trip with my wife to Scotland......

are you just taking the impeller part of the pump off? easier to remove alternater then 3 bolts that hold the alt. cradle and pump+ housing complete down.

Hi, :D
I take it that the water pump is shot at, dying or dead :?
The long way is the easiest and the safest and its not too bad once you get it into your mind that your doing it.
I have had quite a bit of experience regarding this as I have just rebuilt the engine several times over, its a VERY long story

to get at that bolt you are on about slide a 1/4 or 3/8 drive 13mm socket on an extension down there - it does fit . just behind cam cover /right of injector pump as you look at engine.
really is quite easy - as chaps said , alternator off , alternator bracket off and bobs ya uncle .
be very careful when seperating two halfs of pump - impellor from housing - alloy body and pissy little bolts , easy to strip thread on housing or snap bolts.
