Van's running sweet once warmed up but for the first five minutes from cold the engines trying to race away from me. When driving this is fine, but at the lights and in traffic, i.e in neutral it's as if I've got the loud pedal on the floor.

1.9DG with Pierburg 2E3. Big nuts and bolts I can handle, but carburettors have always baffled me.

The choke must work as it turns off slowly as the temp rises and the engine settles to a nice idle. I've tried adjusting the 'choke valve gap' as per the Haynes manual but with the 'fast idle adjusting screw' on the highest step of the cam I cannot push the vacuum diaphram pullrod upwards as suggeted in Haynes. The choke flap is in the wide open position and just seems to flap around with no resistance.

Am I getting confused - should I just adjust the fast idle screw with it set on the second step of the fast idle cam with the engine warm? PLEASE HELP - the engine racing from cold is REALLY SCARY!

Can no-one help. I really am scrathcing my head and it really isn't a nice way to wake the van up in the morning!

Gently blip your foot on the accelerator pedal, it sound's like the auto-choke's not knocking off.

Try undoing the 3 screws that hols the choke in place and rotate the choke unit anti clockwise about 6mm or so, this will have the eefect of moving the fast idle cam to a lower setting when cold and won't hold the fast cam on so long.

Thanks for the replys. I've tried both and it's not sorted the problem. The choke is going off and it's not staying on too long, ie the rotation of the choke body is about right. It's just that right from start up when cold the engine really races. I don't just mean fast but it's pedal to the floor fast.

I'm certain that the choke spring is engaged when I put the choke body back on but the choke flap is always in the vertical / open position. I don't think the choke flap would make any difference to engine speed though, just the mixture - but as I said, chokes baffle me!

there is a screw on the left that sets the fast idle speed when the choke is on try adjusting that off a bit see if it helps.
