Changing Tailgate Struts

Just got a new set through the post. Any tips on how to carry out this job?

Use a brush handle (or suitable chum) to hold the tailgate up and slip the circlips off both ends .... refitting is the reverse of removal it's as simple as that.

one end has a kind of ball and socket, just lift the metal clip and they come off....simple

Right so, this job would have taken 15 minutes max, for both sides except I made one fatal mistake-I took the circlips off the ball end of the new ones. I found it near impossible to get them back on. Simply loosening them or not doing anything and just tapping them home with a mallet would have done the job.
Anyway, the tailgate snaps up now. You actually need pressure to push it shut! Result!!!
