Fridge vent

Can anyone tell me why you need to specifically have the square aluminium Electrolux fridge vent on the side of the van or camper?
Does it have to be that specific vent or could I not use an alternative? As far as I am concerned as long as the flue is there all the ally plate seems to do is prevent rainwater from entering.
The reason I ask is because I moved my fridge location and got everything fantastically in place only to realise that where I had made a hole for the flue to exit out of the side of the van is the swage line of the bodywork and because the ally electrolux vent is square and large it doesn't quite look right. Just wondering whether I could replace this with a more slimline or better looking vent or does it have to be the all electrolux job?
