Back brakes: drums and shoes

I've been doing a car maintenance course one evening a week at a local college. For the last few weeks we got to work on our own vehicles so I took the van along. Had the back brakes apart this week and the tutors recommended that new shoes and drums were needed. Shoes are worn and cracked. Drums are far from smooth on the inside, more of a corrugated effect!

I've already ordered new shoes from VW and they cost me £69 with a £15 surcharge (inc. vat). However the drums (which I haven't ordered yet) are going to be £80 each (inc. vat), so I was thinking of getting drums from GSF (£25 each, plus vat).

So my question is; would it be a waste of money getting VW shoes and then putting cheaper drums on? Should I wait till I can afford VW drums?

Very grateful for any thoughts / advice.

Tony :)

hi tony
with general car stuff i always get the pattern stuff from factors like gsf etc, i only tend to buy genuine for the more intricate stuff like wheel cylinders etc as the quality of the seals seems better.
i would go with cheap drums and cheap shoes cos you'll be paying for the badge from vw m8. (probably made by the same company too)
brakes are almost consumables so i'll not pay extra for them

Got me sums wrong! The £69 that I paid at VW included a wheel cylinder as well, so the shoes were £41 (inc. vat) with a £15 surcharge to add to that.

£28.50 inc. postage for the shoes on ebay though, I'll have to go and have a chat with the nice man at VW and see if he'll let me return them. On second thoughts, Nicola can go and have a chat with the nice man at VW . . .
