Does size matter if you're a dipstick??

Can you help?

I had my 1900cc air-cooled VW Devon type 25 restored, and the cheeky people who did it mislaid my original dipstick. It was replaced by one from a beetle that appears much shorter, but I can't measure oil with it at all, not even when I re-fill it.

My VW is fond of marking it's territory, so I do need to check oil levels!

I get the feeling size does matter, so can anyone tell me how long the dipstick should be, as mine does appear a wee bit stunted.

Thanks for all your help, Schmood

We've had so much hassle with them, it's been a nightmare. After a lot of badgering, they did eventually replace the lost dipstick, but with this short one, and I've got to the stage where I just don't want to deal with them anymore.
For a while it really spoilt our enjoyment of the van. We've owned Bertie since 1982, and restored it to enjoy with our little ones, so I want to start up happy memories from now on.
That's why I'm trying to sort it out myself.

Hey ho

Thanks Jason,

I'll check them out.

If anyone has a dipstick from that type of engine, could you measure it for me? Then I'll know what size I need.

Best wishes, Schmood

If you do get one that is too long when you do an oil change put exactly the 4 L in (including the filter) and you can mark the lower point, thwn put another Litre in and thats your upper mark. :)
