hi - how does insurance normally work with lpg conversions - i.e. does it have to be done by a registered garage or is the van still insured if done dIY?

If you have it done professionally you'll receive a certificate, which will apease your insurer's concerns. If you do it yourself you'll need it certifying by an approved installer, who'll charge you an appropriate fee, IF they consider it safe.

Gasure's installations are recognised by Adrian Flux/NIG and Just Kamper's company (HIC it was called)

When we notified RAC (our insurance) they didn't want anything... just changed out policy to petrol/gas powered. Registration didn't care either... just changed it to gas, but this year's MOT asked me which it was running on at time, as it showed up with both on computer for emissions test.

yes Phredd, that is true. .... just as I said in my original post.

On our MOT last year the guy couldn't get a reading so, after clicking the machine on and off a few times Mercus told him it was on gas ... he shrugged and hung the sniffer up. Didn't even stick it up this year ... said 'Oh, I remember this van !' and didn't bother.

good stuff - it seems that gasure are the people to go with when looking for conversion - however - £1000 sounds a bit steep ! Is this the normal going rate or does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?

my insurers, HIC, done thru just campers, never asked for the LPGA Certificate, which i haven't got as it was conv. in germany, and i have no paperwork relating to it, but when i asked if they'd need one when i renewed, they said they would, as insurance would not be valid without it, so technically, i was driving around with invalid insurance for the 1st year costs about 30 quid to have the checks done by a registered installer.

Beware.. you may get a cheaper conversion.. but you may also get a crappy install.. I have seen a lot of so called profesional installs that I wouldnt get in..... some that cost a lot more than £1k

You can go DIY and a safety check may be required by your insurance company. Check first, some don't ask for one, some increase the premium, others don't. Some LPG installers won't touch a T25 and others seem unsure of the conversion. Gasure are the only converters that I know of with specialist VW knowledge and are very reasonable. If you do go DIY then Interpretation of the CoP11 guidelines and getting a certificate can be a problem. My local LPG inspector won't pass a T25 if the filler is placed by the number plate or close to it. Others will - be prepared for a complete farce!

Our's is on the offside rear 'wing' cos we have a bike rack on all the time.

Guess what Ian, he wouldn't pass yours unless the filler pipe is vented to underneath the vehicle and then makes its way back to the tank. He's a real so and so and fails most authorised conversions! As far as he is concerned your fill point is in the engine bay, ludicrous!

Had another look at yours Ian, yours is in the wheel arch and would be ok.

Mine is neatly hidden behind the rear numberplate; access is easy like topping up the oil - how on earth could they object to that!? They must be on another planet!! (and fitted by Gasure - my request to put the filler out of sight)
