I've just received the parts highlighted in pink (thanks boxerdog!) the last owner decided to remove them. :(

I've just opened up the Haynes and noticed the bits marked in red. Are they what makes it work? Where do they live on the vehicle? I've looked at the picture on th wiki and can't work out whats happening with the cooling setup.

Could someone take a picture or describe what i should have and where it should be.

Thanks in advance :)

The bits in the pic are NOT to do with cooling... they are on the carbs...

the "bellows" for the cooling flaps is mounted underneath.. most likely it failed and hasnt been replaced.. but they fail "open" in anycase so removing the flaps is actually pointless.. lunless some fool managed to jamb them shut..

I think the bellows is not available any more...

You might be looking for a good second hand one...

the flaps are actuated via a bowden cable from a bellows type thermostat which should be under the right hand bank of cylinders, the cable runs from this, round an idler pulley just below where the dipstick tube enters the crank case, up through a hole in the tinware next to the dipstick hole and clamps onto the actuating arm/rod that connects the two flaps together.

hope this helps

Are those bits not what you both described?

So what your saying is i need to get 90% of the tinware off to see that the last muppet has left behind  .

One last question....

Can i get the tinware off easly without dropping the engine out?

Yep that would be the one.
if you remove the tinware under the right hand cylinders so you can see the pushrod tubes you can access the thermostat from there, no need to strip tinware from the top half

Even to get the flaps in?

I've only ever fitted flaps with the engine out, by removing the fan housing, so not sure what you can get to with the motor still in situ?

To be honest i think the engine may as well come out. Only took 10 mins last time :)

looks from your picture that the flaps are in m8? they're connected to the slightly cranked steel rod in your picture. if they were missing your van would have probably seized this summer as it would get too hot.
the thermostat goes underneath and can be fitted without removing anything. however all it will do is help your engine warm up quicker as it pulls the flaps open and re diverts cooling air elsewhere. the flaps are sprung to the correct position so that should your thermostat fail or the cable snap they send maximum cooling air round the engine.
i can't see the point in fitting the thermostat cos it isn't really required.

The top right hole in this pic is where the bar goes(should) through.

All missing.

No the bits in the photo... I cant read the writing on the photo so not sure what you have said there.. but could see the arrows pointing at the carbs... My mistake maybe...

The bits in the drawing are for the cooling system...

I'd have thought it would be too cold without them :S

Never seeing them work dosn't help me :( but i thought they blocked the air flow so the engine warmed up then moved out the way to allow cooling

they direct the air to the right places ie oil cooler, the flaps are not just an open/close system like a tap. the thermostat is not vital but YOU DO NEED THE FLAPS FITTED SO THAT THEY STAY OPEN OTHERWISE YOU WILL PROBABLY COOK YER ENGINE IN THE SUMMER.

did i say that loud enough?
