I have an 82 Aircooled bus (auto), The rear fog lamp has never worked and with the man from the ministry due to give it his seal of approval in 2 weeks time I need to get it sorted.

I'm not completely technically inept but with time constraints want to get it sorted asap.

I have looked on the very useful brickyard sight which says that fuse 2 covers RH side lamp/tail lamp, No plate lamp and fog lamp, as the rear lamps and no. plate lamp work Im presuming it's not the fuse.

That leaves bulb or relay. My questions are this:
1.Which bulb is it in the rear cluster and are there fog lights on both sides or just one (if so which side?)

2.Which relay covers fog lights??? Brickyard says 7 my manual seems to show only 5 relays (I haven't investigated my fuse box yet trying to get furnished with info. before I start messing with things)

3. If I change these things and still get no joy any ideas what might be the problem??

VW for what ever reason only fitted one rear fog lamp to their vehicles & this is located on the offside. Switch on all your lights & the one that doesn't light up is the duff rear fog lamp. Change the bulb & at the same time check the connections to the lamp cluster. If you have checked the fuses then you will have to find the relay assuming that there is one on that circuit.

just a quick one,,, you are trying it with your lights on arent you? cos as far as i know they won't work unless your lights are on

From memory, which is not very reliable in my case, the FOG light switch in my van ('86 wasserboxer), has three positions, 1. Off, 2.Front lights only, 3.front and rear. In the third position the little telltale light on the switch itself comes on. This may be an LED for all I know.
You need the ignition on to get the head lights to work and with them on (Full or dip I beleive) and the fog light switch in No. 3 position you should have battery voltage at the bulb holder. Wiring colour according to Mr Haynes is Grey/White.
I would check the bulb first if not bulb then follow the above and check for volts on connector.
Haynes shows fuse 27 10 amp and relay J5 on the wiring diagram, J5 being fed from the X circuit which is live with ignition on, but I think not live during starter cranking. Something like that.
Earth connection could also be cause.
PS Relay J5 is shown in position 7 (Left end of bottom row) in the Haynes diagram, but also shown in a photo of what looks like the earlier (i.e. yours) fuse box as No. 4 position (fourth from left), you takes your choice.

The relay is only fitted and needed if you have front foglamps fitted, if you do have front fogs they don't actully have to work for the MOT as they are classed as auxilury lighting.

Certainly on later vans the rear fog fuse is stuck in a single houseing on the top of the relay board, not in a line with the other fuses. The main fusebord also has a fog lamp fuse in it but thats only for the front fogs.

In the UK your aloud a single fog lamp in the centre or on the right hand side of the vehicle, a pair is also fine (even with a blown left hand bulb) but if the right hand lamp doesn't work its a fail. The teltail on the dashbord switch is a little bulb, not an LED, so it can fail though its unlikely. The teltail is also required to work for the MOT though they are often overlooked. If the teltail works and the rear lamp doesn't it'll be a bulb or fuse. You'll need igniton and headlights on aswell ofcourse.

Cheers for all your replies guys very helpful. Problem now solved which was two fold but very simple. New bulb required and some cleaning up of the connector in the rear light cluster and hey presto instant light. Booked in for MOT next Monday fingers crossed
