fuel question van wont start?

Hi all.
This is my first post. cool site and plenty of info but i need your help on a petrol problem, I have just changed the engine on my 2L cu Aircooled today for a second hand recon. but when it came to start it up no petrol was getting to the carbs. Now the van is on my driveway and the front of the van is pointing downhill on a slope. Will this affect the petrol from reaching the carbs from the tank? The battrey wasent to great today so i put it on a quick charge and turned the van over for about 1 min before it died. I have now put it on an overnight charge to see if it will pump the fuel down the line or in this case up the line. If you have disconected the fuel line and connected it up again how long will it normaly take for the fuel to travel down the pipe to fire it up.
I am sure there will be plenty of more questions from me in the nere future :O)

I think van being on slope mgiht affect starting if you have less than 1/2 tank of fuel. Easy test is to pull fuel pipe of out off pump and crank engine. I ffuel comes through then should start if not try connecting up aseperate container (jerry can) full of fuel and connect lines to and from pump into this. That way you can start the van and elimanate the tank qustion. cheers

did you change the pump, or is it the pump that came on the engine you have put in?
if the fuel line is full of air, and the pump is dry, it will take quite a long while to pump all the way up there......
i would be putting a couple of squirts of fuel straight down the top of the carbs, maybe a egg cup full between them. Once it fires up the pump will catch up, if it is pumping at all.....

ok thanks for the info. i will try putting some petrol down the carbs, i was going to try this today but did not have enough time to get any petrol in a can
and the fuel pump came with the recon.
