could be many answers i know but here goes ?
batteries are ok
van wont start, but if i put screwdriver across terminals on starter solinoid it fires up, so that means starter is ok.
does this mean that the solinoid on the starter is knakered? i have hit it a few times in case it is stuck, to no joy
1. if i take off starter can i get into the solinoid ? or is it sealed unit ?
2. is there anything else i should check first
Many thanks
Mark

Either the feed to the starter solenoid is faulty (could be from the ign switch right to the connector on the starter) or the solenoid is duff..
I would check you are getting volts at the end of the wire, could be that its rotted away....

Does the solenoid clunk when you turn the key?
If not then you need to trace the voltage to the solenoid, if you have power to the solenoid then it's the solenoid.
If the solenoid clunks then you need to check the big lead from the battery to the solenoid, if thats okay it's the solenoid.
After that I can't help. Sorry.

if it will start by crossing the terminals he must be getting power..
sounds like the solenoid chap. its fitted on top of the starter.

not true i'm afraid.
the battery lead goes to one terminal on the solenoid direct so he's bound to have power there. the other goes into the starter motor so as he crosses them he bypasses the solenoid. so we know the starter is ok but that doesn't tell us if theres power to the solenoid from the ign switch.
it's easy to check the solenoid,, take a short length of wire which is bared at each end (just normal thin wire will do) touch one end to the fat lead on the starter that goes to the battery, and touch the other end onto the small switchwire terminal on the solenoid (usually a spade connection)
if the solenoid is ok it will pull in, which will bridge the two terminals you bridged and turn the engine which will confirm you have no 12v feed from the ign switch to the solenoid.
if it doesnt engage or it just clunks then the solenoid is fooked
