Am wondering if anyone can clear this one up for me?
I have recently purchased a 1.9 petrol T25 and am keen to get converted to gas ASAP for obvious economy reasons.
A mechanic told me the other day that , by converting to gas, I will reduce the life of my enging by half due to excess wear!
Is this true or just a load of old rubbish??!!

you cant run a new motor in on lpg. :: other than that thats news to me...........shock

Only 'cos you can afford to use it three times as much as on fool's gold

Change the oil regularly and look after it and you'll definately not regret it.

the engine burns it...

ask the mechanic why he thinks that it will half the life...

i dont think i will bother asking the mechanic anything in future! Maybe he is not much of a mechanic!

Over they years I've been around lpg and petrol engines, I've never heard a knowledgeable person say it was harder on engine. I've heard many say is better and will give 30% better engine life because lpg burns cleaner... no carbon deposits, doesn't contaminate oil as much, etc. I've worked on a few fleet vehicle on lpg and found them much better and cleaner inside then the sister engines of same mileage.

lpg IS harder on the upright engine.......
but not on a flat four,
its why they fit top end lube systems on inline engines, flat four hasnt the problem, it isnt an issue!

its all to do with the petrol , when they were running on leaded.

hes partly right, but obviously knows nothing about flat four engines.....

worry not, ive been running on lpg since 2003.

Interesting answer Mocki, as I'm looking for a Syncro and planning to convert to gas if it hasn't already been done, and also toying with a Subaru (or similar) conversion.

Why is there a difference between engine layouts?

when i rebuilt my 2.1 last year, which had been conv to run on lpg at least 8 years ago, 210,000km on it and there was not a hint of a step at the tops of the bores, and the factory cross-hatched honing marks were still visible on the bores! everything i've read about running on gas says that its much kinder to the engine, as the bores are'nt 'washed' with petrol which leads to wear and removes the oil film, the engine was surprisingly clean inside too (leaky water jacket gaskets prompted the rebuild, if you're thinking why rebuild it then!)

I think that the conclusion is that the mechanic in question was talking rubbish!

Having just swapped our leaky 1.9 for a 2.1 I can tell you that inside the exhaust ports after 3 years of running on gas it's bright, clean bare metal aluminium ... not a trace of carbon build up.

Just had the 2.1 emmission tested and it matches the natural background level ... exactly the same as the DG did at last year's MOT.
