One belt instead two on crankshaft, w. pump and alternator

Hi all,

I was today in a scrapyard looking for some parts and I saw a "modification" on a 1.6 Td JX engine, I saw just one belt on crankshaft, water pump and alternator instead the two from factory. The question is: is this safe? no belt slipping? I think is better because the easy way to install but dunno about if it works okay or it doesn't.

Answers?

Thanks.

i would say a much better idea to have just one belt as if your battery light comes on you know your water pump aint turning too!!!!

Mine has only one belt (1.6 JX), it did 250,000ks without a problem.

Mac,

Be aware there is more than one waterpump, alternator pulley layout on VW TDs, at least an early/late design I believe for JXs?

if your van has two pulleys leave it that way.it was designed that way.for a reason.so leave well alone.imo..

Yes,

I think if it is designed that way is better to leave it... It has on water pump two pulleys, and it's difficult to change these belts sometimes...

Dunno what to do now, at least I'd like to try and see how it works, I mean the van parked and I checking the belt movements at different revs...

My JX only has one belt, I'm pritty sure it was built that way. Must be a later thing as mine is one of the very last made (1992).

Can't remember what the belt size was but I went to GSF, told them I had a 1 belt 1.6TD T3 from 92, and after the usual argument that they don't exist at that age which I settle by pointing to their carpark and the J reg plate, they then tell me I should call it a T25 anyway (aperently the front engined model is called a type 4  ). Eventully after all that fuss they gave me the corect belt streight off the list their stock computer for that model. They must have herd of the 1 belt vans even if they don't know when they were made or what they are called. To be fair though we got there in the end though and the price was fine!

I suppose on some vans it allows for a power steering pump and air conditioning pump. Maybe (now I could be wrong on this) caravelles have extra pulleys for this reason, whereas the transporter just has to run the alternator and water pump usually so it just has the one. My transporter just has the one. Can anyone confirm this theory?

Hey Mac

Why do you want to change to the one belt system. If it aint broke dont fix it springs to mind.

The two belt system can be a pig to change but its nothing a resourceful chap cant do with a screwdriver and the starter motor.

Curious.....

- That makes perfect sense, I have no power steering or Air-Con and have only one belt.

Sorry, I do not know what size it is as I cannot see it during the week. It is dark when I got to work (0545) and dark when I return (1800).

If you still need it I can look on the weekend. From memory it's about 12 - 15 mm.
