I have just read elsewhere on this site that oe vw alloy wheels {carat} dont need extended wheel studs. I am just wondering if this is fact or just an opinion as i have just brought a set for mine. I only opted for the genuine over some nice big rims for safety reasons so i intend to fit them 100% as they should be, regardless of cost. Any help much appreciated

as far as i know you will need to get different wheels nuts/studs as the ones for steel wheels will not fit. get genuine new one from vw for not to much money.cheers

The only difference is the nuts and studs, the factory alloys use tapered seats as opposed to the radiused seats of the steels, you can buy them from Simon at brickwerks,

tis a definite fact.i have the alloys on mine.i suggest you get the front stud conversion kit whilst your ordering your tapered nuts...

Cheers for the advice, I am aware that i will need correct nuts for alloys, I am more concered about the lengh of the rear studs as alloys are deeper than steels so i presumed proper studs would be longer, Didn't want to end up with the nut only on half as far as ideally required, Thanks again

That`s why the OE VW Carat alloys don`t need longer studs / front bolts, they were made with deep counterbores so they fitted with no mods.

Sorry to raise this subject again but i went to have my wheels fitted yesterday at kwik fit as i needed the tyres from my steel wheels fitting to them. I explained to the tyre fitter that i had concerns about the length off the rear studs. I supplied genuine vw front studs that i got with the wheels which were approx 10mm longer than the originals and also the correct nuts for the rears. As i expected the rear studs were nowhere near long enough and only around half off the nut was sitting on the stud when tight. I did look at this personaly very closely as changing these is going to cost me time and money. I am quite new to volkswagen campers and know very little about them but i have been a hgv mechanic for 14yrs and there is absolutely no way i would fit these wheels with these studs. Maybe some off these vehicles came with longer studs as standard but in my opinion to fit these wheels on these studs regardless off what nut you use is crazy. Also while at vw buying new driveshaft oil seals i discussed this with them and there computer lists the lengh of the wheel bolts for the front and it shows the alloy ones to be longer, If my memory serves me correct it was around 14mm longer. I had the same doubts when I came to fit my Carats, found the info on Brickyard and went with it. Mr Baxter and g60steve really know their stuff and I can safely say I've had no probs at all.
I'd also recommend the McGard locking nuts, that Mr Baxter sells at Brickwerks, to keep your round bits nice and safe, they are top quality. Not the cheapest but, you get what you pay for

I have read everypart off that, Thanks for the link. This still hasn't convinced me that they are o.k. If the rears don't need to be longer then why do the fronts. It doesn't make sense. I am going to go with longer studs for my own peice off mind. I am sure mr baxter knows what he is talking about but i wont be able to sleep at night if i dont. I was going to go to vw on tomorrow to order the studs for the back so i will see what they say. If they tell me there was never any studs available i might reconsider, Cheers Steve

I fitted a set of Carat alloys with 185 R14s but mine came with the original VW studs/Nuts. No problem whatsoever fitting other than you must remove the small nut on the face of the rear drums. Will check tomorrow how many full turns/depth of stud, etc.

VW don't sell longer rear studs simply because they are not needed.
Just for your peace of mind have a think how many T25's VW produced that came with the optional Carat alloys.....hundreds of thousands!

Also there's no need to remove the 12mm bolt on the rear drums because the Carat alloys are designed to fit over this.

7 full turns of the nut/bolt is adequate.

Just wondered if these are the VW alloys you may be trying to fit. I believe that they were an optional extra on the T25 (Caravelle?) If so they do need longer studs/bolts and the seats are radiused (like the standard steels) not tapered.

The 'Carat' alloys that are referred to, are the five spoke type and fit on standard length studs and bolts but with tapered seats, I believe.

Sorry but you are wrong, they are the exact same fitment as the carat alloys, I have them on my van,

I totally agree with Tom.
The only nuts and bolts listed for VW OE alloys fit both design of wheel.
