The only "knobbly" off road tyre I know of in 14" is the blackstar Guyane, I have them on my syncro in 15" and they are bloody noisey and I dont think you would really want to drive a lot of miles on them...
Other than them, I think all you can go for are "winter" tyres in 195 or 205 14... but not many in thise sizes anymore..
Going to 15" rims opens up a large amount of tyres.. but you cant go too big as they will touch the bodywork..
I presume you are going for the "imitation" offroad look...

grip for what??? on the road knobblies are not anywhere near as good as road tyres... if you need a bit better grip for campsites etc, then a set of "winters/mud and snow" might work better, but still a compromise on the road in summer...
If you want better road grip, Continental Vanco's in 185R14 work very well until they are nearly worn out...
then get a pair of snow chains for thise sticky campsites etc...

i was thinking more for playing in mud, i do quite like pulling down ditches as i drive along, but i didnt think of the noise factor on the road. although im not sure that will be to much trouble as all the baffles are gone in my exhaust.

you would be surprised... a tired exhaust is one thing, but knobblies are a different story...
driving in ditches???? each to thier own I suppose.....
Maybe you are driving the wrong vehicle....
