Different types of CS Diesel engines

Hello All
I phoned Heritage today about some parts but when it came to the head bolts I have 2 different sizes?!?!?!?! :?
Apparently the first 300 engines produced had smaller bolts, M11 and not usual M12 ????? :?
Is there anything especially different about these earlier ones
Are they worth anything other than historical value
Is it worth the extra work to keep the engine as it was or do i just expand the holes in the head and bolt it on!

By taking your chassis number to your local Vw dealer they may be able to give you an idea of which ones you will need.

Then you get them from 'Heritage' or any other parts supplier as they will be/should be cheaper.

OR, take one out and measure the diameter of the threaded bit to find out the correct size .

Would have thought if it was only the first 300 with the little bolts, they proved very prone to failure and were haisterly redesigned. Usally the case if a manufacturer makes a design change soon after a new model comes out.

If they break that'd make early ones worth less I'd suspect. Its not a visable part (unless there are other changes) so you won't get the kudos for being spotted with a rare part on your van (and if you do you should probubly be a tad scared). Go with whatever is easyer to fit/fix.

Ok thanks for the responce,
So if I use the head just expand/drill the excisting holes so they will take the big bolts and re tap the threads in the block as well.
Thank you Kris
