and the new HT leads don't fit....

so....consulted haynes. Read about compression on cylinder 1 etc etc, but thought that we would consult the club....is it something that we can do ourselves......can we "just" undo the mounting bolt, turn it through 180 degrees and put it back??

thanks folks

Nahh, wont work as the slots in the shaft that the distributor sit in are offset. Need to remove the distributor driveshaft, rotate ot 180 degrees and re-insert, then the dizzy will go back in the correct place. Had to do this on mine when I first got it. Pain in the bum bit is getting the driveshaft out if its worn a bit of a lip but it can be done!

Anyway, you have a reply PM! :D

Will the engine still run ok like this?

Mark - thanks for the reply! And the PM....

Karl.....the engine has been seemingly running fine for the last 3 years....yes we have changed the leads and plugs....but previously we have had JK sets, and simply replaced one at a time. This time we have bought a set from a local supplier....more expensive, but look much meatier, and they are OEM spec according to supplier (box is german - cost £26+vat). Just a few cm shorter on the 3 and 4 leads. The long ones fit with the dizzy 180 degrees out, the only one that won't is number 3!

Hope we haven't done any damage...

my camper has run like this it is no problem, the timing for all the cylinders are the same, unlike the beetle which I think has a cylinder advanced. My HT lead from GSF is a little tight on one of them but it reaches.

pain in the butt distributor -- update!

OK - after a day trying to get the engine running properly with VW camperfan the other other week, we discovered the dizzy isn't 180 out - looks like it is 90 degrees out.

Didn't know that this was possible. But she has a very slight missfire, and stinks of gas at the exhasut end, much much more thatn the other vans, so sommat ain't right.

Mark tried valiantly to get the timeing right, but this proved impossible because of the arrangement of ditributor. He and John found the begiining of the compression stroke for number one.....shame it weren't right on the dissy...

so, the distributor shaft needs to come out.....but the bugger is in there pretty damn tight. Haynes refers to a specail tool or puller to get it out....(tried the trick with screw and rawl plug - wasn't having any of it!) so where do I get said tool from??
:?:

all help, as usual gratefully received!

thanks
Emma

There is a good chance you will regret removing dizzy shaft which will result in engine strip down.

No Jason....that was my old air cooled, which is now in air cooled heaven.

Should have said....2.1 running on carb and LPG.

Andy....thanks for note of warning....but why? Should I just try and get the timing right and use a longer lead, then?

thanks again,
Emma

Did you buy it as a non runner? I can't think of any way a distributor would jump 90 degrees out? :?: Presumably if it wasn't bought as a non runner it was running ok, before?

FWIW I bought a set of leads for my aircool from JK. They were wrong in as much as the long plugs caps were on the leads that went to where the short caps should have gone IYSWIM? I just laid them out in length and swapped the plug caps to suit.
