engine fault

hi can anybody help regarding 1.9 watercooled engine that keeps cutting out. have given engine a service and noticed spark plugs black and sooty mixture a bit rich what causes and cures can i do as you can guess a little limited on mechanical knowledge many thanks

black plugs is rich, but did you change them after a long run, or just after starting it up cold, when choke will run it rich anyway ?
If black after a run then definately rich in which case not enough air, too much fuel, wrong timing.
Air filter first, then check timing is correct, then do idle speed, if not right then it will require a bit more investigation

had problem with my 1.9dg cutting out would just stop as if out of fuel changed filters cleaned carb still probs cutting out. then a couple of mounths ago i came out of some where and fuel dripping under van found flex hose attached to fuel filter leaking changed, now the cutting out problem seems to have gone away. suspect the pipe had gone porous allowing air in
