It Never Rains but it pours.... oil!!

I can see 2008 is going to be an expensive year as not only do I need a new exhaust but I have just discovered oil all over my engine. .... T25 1900 petrol DG. As I look down on it the whole top is covered. It has also been blown (hopefully) round near the air filter and is also all over the bottom of the engine. I have topped up with oil and luckily it was still above the min mark so I hope no major damage.

My ? is with so much oil all over the place how can I tell where the leak (or leaks  are coming from. Where on earth do I start. It it worth trying to clean some oil off (and with what?) so I have some chance of finding the source. Any advice much appriciated. Thanks.

Oil over the top suggests a crankcase breather blockage or the hose has come adrift

wash it off with 'gunk' and then run the engine looking for any obvious signs

Thanks Kev, will look tomorrow at the pipe (I've got a Haynes manual so should be able to find it!) and get some Gunk and have a go at cleaning it up.

I had a blocked crankcase breather 6 months ago.
It forced oil out of the crankshaft seal (alternator belt end)
Oil was sprayed up over the engine.
