my van has developed an interesting new clickety ratlle , something sounds loose in the engine...

the noise increases as you need to change gear and then subsides until its time to change again.

interestingly enough the gears are much easier to change and i have noticed a gentle hiss as my foot comes up on the clutch only audible when engine is off.

any ideas, am i about to have a major break down, will driving make things worse or do i carry on until i can't!

i have got a bloke to have a look, but not till tuesday, and theres a weekend inbetween.......

Year of manufacture =1983
Engine size=probably1.9
Engine code if applicable
left or right hand drive =right
transmission type: /manual
Fuel type: diesel/

:D chears mate, thats my general attitude too, no other way really in an old vehicle, cross your fingers and drive and think of it as an adventure

WHat engine is it??
If 1.9/2.1 watercooled petrol or 1.6/2.0 Aircooled petrol it sounds like a lazy tappet (hydraulic tappets fitted to these engines).. short trips dont help, take it out for a good 30 mins.. oh and what oil you got in it? anything less than a 15w40 and they will leak down..

"the noise increases as you need to change gear and then subsides until its time to change again." thats coz you are accelerating!!!! the noise will be a direct relationship with rpm....

The hiss is something completely different.. thats the servo assistance on the brakes.. after 3 presses, you wont hear it as the vacuum has gone when the engine is off..

broken down

chears its actually a diesel and it has now died. dropped to second to turn corner after coming down hill, and realised engine had cut out, started (eventually in clouds of white smoke and crept at high revs to park safely, rescue brought it home, now wont even start, no batterry problem as lights shine brightly. must admit was low on diesel (have put can in in case but no change) and has only done short runs lately.....any ieas?
