Electricity Died

I got my van started this morning after bleeding some air out of the system and after about a minute it cut out. When I went to restart it there was no power. When I turn the ignition on there is a clicking noise from the engine and when I turn the key fully there is nothing.

I'm hoping that there is some sort of fuse that i've blown, but don't really know. What should I be checking?

It's a 1.6td by the way.

Solenoid in the starter motor sticking. It's a common problem. :(

Alternatively, it's wear in the starter motor, possibly to the shaft. Iirc this problem means the starter dosn't engage properly. Consider getting your starter reconned.

find the starter motor and gently hit it with a large hammer, try again, if it don't work get someone else to turn the key while you hit it again ... harder!

if this doesn't work then consider a new or recon one!

Do you mean no lights on dasboard? No wipers? No sidelights ?

Or
Just no starter motor

It's not the battery/terminals, i've double checked they're ok.

There is a complete lack of power to anything when I turn the key.

I'll try hitting the starter motor, but would that stick so suddenly? It was running, cut out and then refused to start.

The ignition lights come on briefly. The clicking comes from the rear, but if I try to turn any lights on then there is a clicking from the glovebox.

Not had a chance to poke around much yet because of work and lack of light.

Right, Looking back at Sheads old posts he's had alternator belt problems, no mention of if he sorted them.

At a wild guess then, the battery isnt charging .

a diesel will run on with a knackered alternator. but a minute or two is not a long time running before it cut out?? draining the battery in such a short time?? heater plug relay stuck on?? a strange one indeed...

Altenator belt is still a bit loose, but it just means that it takes longer to charge. The battery is still virtually fully charged so that isn't the sole problem.

Gonna try to sort it out this week and i'll let you know what I discover the problem is.

How do you know the battery charge level?
Do your side and head lights work?
