The engine ends have snapped off the plastic front to back pipes on my 1.9 DG.. They have been like it a very long time I think and they have decided that there gonna leak again (ad in wanted if you got some for me! )
Anyone had this before, or just me? Anything could have cause it or just age? (pliastic gone brittle?) its very odd.

No its common (sadly) the metal inserts become corroded and jubilee clips are used instaed of spring clips to take up the slack , it leads to cracked plastic. I have managed to repair the rear on one of mine with a pipe from halfords, and cutting back the plastic pipe and reseating the metal insert . I have a pair of pipes out side that were on the way out, failing that its down to your local VAg agent to see if they still have your variety in stock about £70 a side then you will have the joy of finding all the other marginal leaks in your system (ask me how I know!)

Gonna phone VW tomorrow about them, for avaliablilty, got the part numbers, I checked with JK and EuroCarParts, only seem to list the return pipe, and not the feed (thats the one thats worse.) I didn't realise they had metal inserts in them though, that would explain a lot. I don't really want to mess about trying to repair them, I need to replace them and be done with that part of the system as I do a lot of milage. And you don't want to talk to me about leaks, when my van was converted in '87 it had a heater fitted in the back that runs off coolant.. lots of extra hoses, valves and drains, its great because at some point the extra pipes have been chopped open by the steering joint! great stuff I often check mine for leaks anyway at work cause we still have loads of 4 post wheel free ramps at work. (our workshop is a time warp from the 70's and like a rover museum )

Depending on how good the rest of your van is, you might consider investing in these (stainless steel):

I think a return pipe can be used as a feed pipe for the diesel engine.Justkampers stock return pipe.

Its a 1.9 Petrol
Pipes are going to be about £63 each from VW. Can be ordered on Jan 2 when they re-open, and it should be ok cause they have stopped leaking at the moment. I'd like to think my van was good enough for S/S ones but I'm sure the plastic ones will last me long enough

There are loads of different types, make sure you tell them your correct details or you could end up with the wrong ones.

All too common a problem, and some pipes obsolete it's a bit of a pain sometimes.

In that case I'll get them to check my numbers against what they think it is, then at least if its wrong they told me it was the ones they ordered. Got a fallback then if they are wrong.
