propshaft refurb

just to let you all know I have just had my prop re-furbished. GKN at leek did it.
I've not refitted it yet but it looks good. It cost £13 to send to them (recorded and insured) and the repair was £99.88 including return postage and VAT. they have isnpected it, cleaned it all up, replaced both UJs and re-balanced it.
(I was going to have a go myself but couldn't get any of the circlips out they were so rusted, I broke 2 pairs of pliers trying)
Not bad.

How do you know when your prop needs refurbishment? Or after 20 years do things just perish?

The UJ's develop wear, which can usually be detected when its off, and almost certainly when its on as prop vibration will develop at key harmonic speeds (between 38 and 50 usually, depending on final drive ratio, loading and applied torque and its direction (power/underrun), although even with a brand-new prop prop/transmission vibration can occur...
About all you can really say for sure, is that if the van runs through the whole speed range smoothly without any noticeable transmission vibration (NVH, Noise, Vibration or Harshness) then the prop isn't in immediate need of a rebuild...
When its off, check the UJs for excessive stiffness (galling or dried lube) perished (stiff/cracked) grease seals (trouble in future) and the slide action (if any) for smoothness without rock, sloppiness or stiffness.

spot on Harry, about 39 to 48 in my case!! It wasn't so bad really but if I didnt have a passenger that seatbelt latch vibrating was sooooo annoying!!
When I took it off one end was so tight I couldn't move it, the other end was notchy.
GKN also stripped and inspected the internal bush / bearing and gave it the thumbs up. Looking at the prop again today (i've still not unwrapped it, propably wont until friday) I think they might of even painted it!!!

Interesting.
Mine doesn't usually get up to those speeds as most days is just poodling round town & then the radio always on!
Will make a point of having a listen.

mine spends a lot of time at Vmax on the motorway, hence the smoother tyres now! They are still pretty good off road.
I didn't really notice it with MTs on!

Coool - and bargin ! I almost wish my prop was knackered so I could have it done!

Did they replace the bronze bush with poly?
Checked out your website too -real good info on veg oil!

no they checked it tolerance wise and said it was still ok. no noises at all from it.
somebody said the poly bush was a bodge.. ? (discuss...

)

Hi can you post the detail of the place you had the prop reconditioned?
I have just bought my first Syncro after owning 3 Caravelles, 1 panel and 1 transporter T3 all.
The chap I have bought the syncro from tole me the prop has ben removed as it was whining at speed.
I am praying thats right and its not a VC issue. But since the prop is off, I may aswell get it refurbed.

Prop off could mean anything..
whine... mm.. usually a diff..
VC.. only one way to check that out.. fit the prop and drive it a short distance and do some tight turns.. (or try to do some tight turns!!)

Interestingly, i never used to get any prop vibration at all, until i had one end of my prop refurbed, now i get that distinctive seat belt latch buzzing going on between 35-40ish mph.
Must get the other end done at some point and see if it go's away....
