temperature issues

ok, ive done a search and read lots of similar instances but none of them tell me where my temperature sensor is hiding on my 1.6td 1988 lhd import, any ideas?

my guage never moves from cold, my internal heater gets roasting, my external rad stays cold, have replaced thermostat and took the binacle off to make sure the plugs are all sound.

Fan never kicks in unless i short it out, have replaced fan switch too.

don't loose performance (if you can refer to my brown bus as performance) but not having indication or fan kicking in is doing my sweede in!

block temp is in the front end of the block iirc........
please resize your avtar, its too big enough, and messing the whole layout up!!!
80x80 is the correct size.......

the jx engine should have two temperature sensors.

One at the front of the head for coolant, one nearer the side of the head for the glowplug timing.

They should be the same sensors.

Your symptoms sound like a non-opening thermostat though, as the rad isn't getting hot.

maybe this helps:

1 = sensor for glow plug regulation
2 = sensor for temperature gauge
3 = thermostat

just to re-iterate:

Your cab heater is part of the "small" coolant circuit, so it will get hot once the engine warms up. At ~ 85 degrees the thermostat then opens the "big" circuit and feed coolant through the radiator.

Is your coolant reservoir (the one inside the engine bay, not the one behind the service flap) getting warm/hot at all? That's also part of the "big" circuit and a bit easier to detect in this weather than heat on the rad.

great explanation and diagram, much appreciated.
however, it seems i have some strange pick and mix engine as "1" and "2" is all very different on my frankenstein engine. will take some photo's at the weekend when i can get daylight and a camera.

as ive changed the thermostat im thinking the radiator may be blocked, i did take the bleed screw out of the top of it and run the engine warm and coolant just limped out of it

will get photo's and hopefully go from there, cheers

ive spent the last 4 hours out in the cold with the engine on and off anyoying the neighbours but i think im on my way to being sorted.

my engine is a 1.6 golf devr i believe according to some brainbox's on brickyard.

i traced the yellow and red wire as suggested in another thread, and shorted it to earth and hey presto guage reads high. so i took the sender out (one of them push fit 2 wire jobbies) got the part number, re-fitted it and drove round the motor factors. surrprise supprise only vw had one at £18 plus the dreded. pluged it in and still no joy. bugger! :x

have now spliced the return lead from the plug with a new wire straight to earth which causes the needle to move a bit so ill see how i get on.

also flushed the rad. nothing obvious there. its a justkampers thermostat

thanks for all the advice :) [/img]

I'm unfamiliar wit dervs (golf or otherwise), is the temp sender in the head or in the coolant circuit? I'm assuming you bled the coolant circuit as surgested in th Wiki. is it possible you have an airlock where the sender is?
