Is it safe to run a 10mm spacer on a syncro with longer studs or could they shere off under load?

I have a set of 15" Passat steels I want to fit but the centre bore is smaller. The easiest way to fit them looks to be a 10mm spacer.

Has anyone done this or is it dodgy?

My rear wheel bearing needs replacing anyway!

I doubt a 10mm spacer would increase bearing wear by too much, I was more worried about it being safe.

The outer rears have gone obsolete from VW.
GSF etc ones are dog sh!t.
Not used EuroCarParts as I have found a source for bearing kits made up by a wholesaler that use the same outers that VW use, and it's the outers that seem to control the amount of play that you get at the wheel.
Don't go changing the rear bearings because they have a small amount of play in them, you will find if you use GSF bearings you will have more play they always have an amount of play in them.

There is more than the normal IRS bearing play in one side. The other side has the normal movement. It's not hanging off, but could do with replacing at some point.

Do you think 10mm spacers are safe to use on a 4x4, there will be no centre location, all the load will be taken by the studs only.

I have big wheels on mine and it gets abused. Also depends on your offset you don't want spacers on wheels with a low offset.

They are Passat 15" steels. I don't know what the offset iss, I will have to look.

They will have an offset of about 45 so 10mm spacers will be perfect.

You talk about longer studs have you tried replacing them and is a difficult job to carry out? Just wondered as can't decide whether to go the steel or alloy route.

Unless you go for genuine T3 rims, you might have to change the studs anyway. I wasn't planning on changing mine until I tried to fit the wheel. I have 10mm spacer on the way from Ebayland.

The front studs a pressed in like the rear. Standard T3's use a threaded disc & bolt. to change the front studs on a Syncro, the disc will have to come off. Once the caliper is off & the grub screw removed it should pull off.

The rear 46mm hub nut & split pin will need to come off & the hub should just slide off the splines. You might need a press to get the studs swapped over though. You might be able to do it in the vice with a big hammer, I have not tried.

I guess I will find out soon enough. I don't know the cheapest place to buy longer studs either. Some that are on ebay look very long!

Do what most others do, use my free info then buy elsewhere.

but dont you need to remove the drive flange part on the front to get longer bolts in?
