When I first looked at the dash I thought the coolant indicator needle was missing.
I have just noticed it is tucked out of sight to the left of the little window bit.
Could the needle be stuck there? Or is it some kind of indicator or sensor that is broken in the depths of the vehicle?

find the wire for the temp sender at the engine end and earth it to the engine. if the wirings ok the needle should go all the way across. if it does your sender is broken, if it doesn't it's something else.
you'll need the ign on to test it.

Just had to sort the earth wire on mine...there was a break in it, so needle no moveee....

Ok so I found the temp sender wire connection buit wasn't sure wheteger to earth the brown or blue/green wire so i tried both.
When each was tested (earthed) the needle moved over to the right and the little red light started flashing.
So this is meaning I need a new temp sender?

I also tried bleeding the cooling system by loosening the little bolt at the top of the radiator with the engine running. Now I was expecting a hiss of air then some coolant to trickle out. However nothing happened, even with the bolt all the way out. Does this mean I have a major problem?

Did you raise the front of the van to do the bleeding? More info here:

Does it need to be raised on a Diesel?

You do not need to raise the front end at all. Its a myth. The bleed point on the rad is already at the highest point. Make sure you have the cap on the expansion bottle, if the system cant presurise then nothing ever will come out.

Took her for a spin round Richmond Park, stopped in the car park, turned off the engine only to hear a hissing noise from the engine bay.

Coolant spraying out of the lower connector of the the expansion tank, I hadn't touched this so I didn't cause this. I tightened up the jubilee clip and all was fine again.
Decided to drive to GSF for a new sensor and on way noticed that the needle seemed top be working. So either the pressure loss was causing the problem or just fiddling with it cleaned the connectors. Good thing really, as GSF was shut.

Managed to bleed her in the end, lovely warm coolant trickling over my fingers. Only did it once though as its got rather dark.
