hi Steve, ta for the quick reply. Is it to lubricate the bush??? and to keep friction down.....?
Thanks Sven

some bushes are made from a sintered metal called 'oilite' ( metal dust basically, sometimes with graphite added, bound together under massive pressure) and these are porous, and will hold oil if left soaking in it.
we use phosphor bronze at work and i machine plain bearings/bushes out of it from solid bar stock, but i dont think this stuff is porous, i think its just a good load bearing friction reducing material, but oil or grease obviously helps as well

phosphorus bronze

ive been using phos/bronze for a good few years as uprated spigot shaft bearings and have never had any drying up problems or screeching noises according to the engineer i use this material is self lubricateing

It isn't phosfor bronze, it is oylite.
this material is porous and does need to be soaked in oil to get it to be self lubricating for it's service life.
Another way of doing it is to place the bush on your thumb facing upwards, fill the bush with oil, put your forefinger over the open end and squeeze, you will see the oil seeping out of the sides of the bush.
This will save you soaking it for 24 hours!
