If there is a part missing it looks like the safety locking catch for the main latch.(unclear photos)

Looks a bit of a bodge, home made job. When the wheel is on it, the rear window view will be blanked out.The one`s made by Syncro Pete are much better.

Now there is someone who hasnt a clue what he is talking about. VW dont bodge! You will certainly be able to see out the rear window with Syncro Pete's version cuz the welds will break with vibration and the wheel will fall off!

I don`t think this Forum is the place to insult people or their abilities.I`ve noticed this quite a lot from certain people of late.Let`s keep to friendly banter and observations.

Lets not be hasty and too judgemental here, on either VW's or Pete's efforts... we do need some good aftermarket wheel carriers to choose from, and when I've actually seen the finished article in the flesh then I'll be deciding to order some or not

It's the screw on the safety catch at the bottom that's missing but he/she reckons its useable as it is.

So which welds would break on Pete's one?

I expect the rose joint would break first. You would have to put an extreme load on the brackets while it was in the unlocked position for it to fail.
Once it is locked in place, it is supported at 3 points. There is hardly any load on it when the wheel is upright. I think it is more than strong enough to withstand long term abuse.

If it can hold this weight then I think it would be ok. There is a hell of a lot of leverage as well as weight there.

It is much better looking than the others I have seen too...

I don't own one of Pete's spare wheel carriers
BUT I have seen them before, during and after. They are more than man enough, to carry the heaviest of wheel and more, ie mud terrain on steel rim. I have no doubt about that.

Syncropaddy -
what type of engineer are you ?
If welding is no good, what would you use?
We all know what you thought of futbus trailing arms.
Did we all need to know? Or should you of perhaps advised him by a pm or email?
I would hazard a guess that you are a theoretical engineer.
Put all your wise knowledge into practice and lets see a wheel carrier, some trailing arms and perhaps a replacement body shell with no welds!
Pete.
