Changing the starter motor

My starter motor packed up today, finally on my TD syncro. When I looked in to changing it a while ago, it looked like it was going to be really awkward. Do I have to drop the gearbox to get at it - because the starter motor is right on top of the gearbox with the clutch slave cylinder bracket holding it on? What happens to the clutch slave cylinder bracket. (I can't see any useful help in my bentley manual). I am unsure if this is something I can tackle myself. As usual when these things happen, I need my van back on the road ASAP. [/i]

This is easy, just unbolt it (two big uns 19mm I think) then let the bracket hang unti,l you have repositioned new starter motor and refit, about 20 minute job, stretches back muscles a bit but easy enough... use a stool or hop-up bheind rear panel to get extra height to lean over engine bay.. make sure main big power lead is well insulated from bodywork

Hi, Thanks for getting back to me. The problem I had was when I undid those bolts, the bracket was absolutely solid, and I couldn't see how to proceed from there. Anyway I have booked it in with Simon......
