anyone know what could make a turbo suddenly develop a whistle on acceleration? it's on a mates JX 1600 turbo diesel crew cab, someone he knows suggested a possible split air hose, does that seem a likely cause? cheers for any help.

Does it do it when you put your foot down and the turbo spools up? Sound like a cop-car chasing you? Does it still accelerate OK or is it sluggish? Is it smoking more than normal suddenly?
If it`s lost it`s power it could just be a hose split or a big air leak, if it`s still boosting OK, just noisy then I`d say somrthing has daamged the turbo impellor and put it outa balance, that`s what the noise comes from.
Time to crawl underneath and check a few things, look for hose leaks first, then any oil coming out of where it shouldn`t like the turbo inlet pipework, or the exhaust pipe to silencer joint. Check that the pop-off valve in the inlet manifold hasn`t come adrift or stuck open (unlikely).
IF the turbo has to come off, then make sure you use a PROPER 12 sided decent socket on the 4 fancy headed bolts, which will be F TIGHT !! If you round `em off you`ll be in a world of pain
