clutch

How would i know if i have had the wrong size clutch fitted to my van i.e would a 228mm clutch work in an engine for a 215mm clutch. Why do I ask well I think I have fitted a 228 mm clutch work in an engine designed for a 215mm.
Sounds daft! but it appears that the part number on the supposed 215 mm clutch I got from just campers, matches up (according to the vag cat) with a 228mm clutch. I have been having trouble changing gear, the pedal is to the floor and I get a juddering sensation when the pedal is on the floor (feels exaclty like you are easing the clutch up slowly). The van also tends to get stuck in gear and hard to get into 1'st and you have to press the clutch pedal twice to free the gears or engage it into 1'st. This problem gets worse as the van warms up. There is also a buzing when you are driving that sounds like it is comming from the clutch pedal and it goes away when you press the cltch pedal twice. It has had a recon gearbox in about 1 month ago.
We have bled the system the two cylinders do not leak and we have renewed the linkages at the back near the gearbox.
Any ideas/pointers much appreciated
cheers

dont know about the clutch interchangeability but the fact that you can overcome the problem by pressing the pedal twice would suggest to me fault is in the actuation rather than the clutch itself. saying that if you have fitted a different clutch does it rely on different size cylinders to give the desired travel of the release bearing. if that is the case then you`ll never get it to work right.

worst case if you can twist the dealers arm maybe you could cross referance clutch part numbers and flywheel numbers to see if its possible to do what you think you`ve done.

Some details might help.

What engine are you talking about?

Have you checked the Wiki for related inputs?

Be surprised if the wrong plate even fitted in ... it should match the flywheel surface and cover, and you cant get them the wrong way round. Sounds like a dragging clutch to me.

a 228mm clutch will not fit a JX flywheel.
Don't you think that if it did there would be a lot more people running uprated clutches, especially for those Hi-Po AAZ conversions and TDI conversions.

never discount anything. done it loads of times and regreated it. my point being if you have fitted the wrong clutch which you probally haven`t the cylinder ratio could be incompatable, its happened to me when building rally cars with a mix of parts.

stay open minded and if you can get a chance to measure the throw of the clutch on a similar van then you can compare that to what you are having. if its the same then no probs with hydrolics but if you are not getting the same throw then look at that b4 you pull the box out again.
