Slick 50

Seeking advice from anyone regarding adding Slick 50 oil additive to the engine and gearbox, is it a wise thing to do? or do I steer clear of it. I am thinking of adding it to a westy atlantic 1.6 td "JX" with 180k (40k on a re-con engine) and an autosleeper trident 1.9 "DG" with 140k original engine. Any thoughts?.

There seem to be mixed views on this.
Most people would say steer well clear in water boxers. Though others report no ill effects.

Oil burners I dont know about.

I wouldnt ever use Radweld.

As for Slick 50, well I'd be wary as I dont like the idea of additives restricting the oil gallerys in what seems to be a engine running on the edge cooling wise.
I've read the pros and cons, and used it in a Polo without any noticable improvement.

I put it in my van 25,000 miles ago, not sure if I'd do it again because of the arguements that it might foul up the oilways

I've had no problems and at the last MOT, tester remarked it was the quietest T25 he had come across. Whether that is the Slick 50 or not I dont know

Your definately better off changing your engine oil every 5,000 miles or sooner using a good quality oil and oil filter (Another can of worms which oil, how often, opinions vary)

case history-
i added slick 50 when got my van at 28K miles(genuine 17years ago)
changed oil/filter every 4K with proper filter and oil at Vw505 spec.
result? engine still wore out at 108K, perhaps a bit better than some.

Answer, if you want your engine to last don't fire it up! :lol:
also replace it every 100K with a proper recon :wink:

theres no substitute for regular oil changes,and use decent oil as this reduces friction at start up.which is basically what slick 50 does as it is graphite based(i think),i have used the gearbox version tho and it did seem to produce improved changing

Thanks for your comments, have now decided to add slick 50 at next oil change and see how it goes on.
