Timing belt?

I posted here about a month ago about my van breaking down coming over Shap in Northumbria. I later found out it was a worn timing belt and I could see with my own eyes that it was not doing it's job.
Is it likely that the engine is ruined beyond repair? I got it going for a short while but it made such a clattering and din't run for long.

I asked a couple of ordinary garages, non VW specialists, what it might cost to fix and they quoted between £500 and £1000. Are things really that bad? Any suggestions?

Fit a new belt, time everything up properly and see what you get when it starts, nothing to loose really :)
