Before going head first in to a gearbox exvhange i I woild realy like to know what the engine is doing when I hit the not so loud peddle?

1 is it possable to install a rev counter on to a 1.9 D (1X engine)

2 is 30 MPG good or bad (a friend had a standard 1.6TD twin cab 5 speed that ran about 45MPG)

van is a coveted 1.9 waserboxer 78ps running a 4 speed box.

old van is still around byt the owner don't want to break it (whay open a breakers yard then.

will the gearbox exchange be worth in with the price increasing every time I need to fill up.

Sorry... what are you doing?
Its not clear from what you have written...

You have a 1.9D installed at the mo and its on what box?

You are thinking of fitting a second hand box from a 1.9 DG wbx..

What you need to do is find out what gearbox code you have and what the code of the other box is..
what hp is the 1.9D (presume not a td?)

30mpg ought to be better depending on what you are doing with it...
45mpg from a nearly new really fresh 1.6TD driven by your grandmother might be possible... 35 -40 more realistic...

Once you know what box you've got and what you are going to change to

you can check the ratios out at BY

http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm

and then work out RPM and Speed here

changing gear ratios does not automatically mean lower fuel consumption. My td actually seems better at high engine but low loads.

Hi, I dumped the 4 speed diesel box and fitted a 5 speed petrol'DW' box.

at 3,000 rpm, im sitting at 60mph, my 1.9 TDI gives around 38 to 40 mpg

Best I have ever done is 425 miles on a single tank of fuel.....
(70 mph, 5 people, camping gear and holiday stuff, fully loaded!)
Newquay (Cornwal) to the East Coat near Gt Yarmouth (Norfolk)

I find anywhere between 60 & 70mph very nice and comfy.....
At 75 to 80mph the engine sounds a bit strangled, at 80 mph Im doing 4,000 rpm......not exactly relaxed driving.......

I think my mpg's are good because im still running the Mk3 Golf boost pin which is all about economy.........
